Over 500,000 Candidates Secure Placement in 2026 CSSPS Exercise
More than 500,000 candidates who qualified for placement into Ghana’s second-cycle institutions have secured schools through the 2026 Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS).
According to figures released by the Ministry of Education, 527,932 candidates out of 604,567 qualified candidates had secured placement, representing about 87.3 percent of all qualified candidates.
The development comes as thousands of families across Ghana prepare for the transition from Junior High School (JHS) to Senior High School (SHS), Senior High Technical School (SHTS), and other technical and vocational institutions.
The 2026 CSSPS exercise has attracted considerable attention because of the high demand for some schools and the number of candidates who were unable to secure their preferred choices through automatic placement.
527,932 Candidates Secure Placement
The Ministry of Education announced that 527,932 candidates had successfully secured placement at the time of its update on the 2026 CSSPS exercise.
The candidates include both male and female students who qualified to progress from basic education into second-cycle education.
Out of the 604,567 candidates who qualified for placement, 76,635 had not been automatically placed at the time of the announcement.
This does not necessarily mean that these candidates have lost the opportunity to continue their education. Candidates who were not automatically placed can use the CSSPS self-placement system to select schools and programmes with available vacancies.
The placement exercise covers public Senior High Schools, Senior High Technical Schools, technical and vocational institutions, and participating private schools.
Why Some Students Did Not Get Their First Choice
One of the major issues highlighted during the 2026 placement exercise is the high demand for certain schools.
Many candidates selected Category A schools as their first choice. However, the number of candidates seeking places in these schools was significantly higher than the available vacancies.
The Ministry reported that 313,283 candidates selected Category A schools as their first choice, while only 76,417 vacancies were declared in Category A institutions.
This means that a large number of qualified students could not all be placed in their preferred Category A schools.
The situation demonstrates an important part of the CSSPS process. Being qualified for SHS does not automatically guarantee placement in a particular school. Candidates must compete for available spaces based on the choices they make and the vacancies available.
There Are More Vacancies in Other Categories
Although competition for some Category A schools remains high, the Ministry’s figures indicate that there are considerably more vacancies across other school categories.
Category B schools had 250,366 declared vacancies, while Category C schools had 468,652 vacancies.
Across the different categories and participating institutions, the number of available places is therefore substantial.
The challenge is that many candidates and parents continue to prefer a relatively small number of highly demanded schools.
For families whose children were not placed in their preferred institutions, the self-placement process provides an opportunity to consider schools with available vacancies.
Self-Placement Remains Available
Candidates who did not receive automatic placement can use the CSSPS self-placement system to select an institution where space is available.
The process gives candidates another opportunity to continue their education without necessarily having to wait for a place in their original choices.

85 Private SHSs Join Free SHS
Another major development connected to the 2026 placement exercise is the participation of 85 private Senior High Schools in the Free SHS Programme for the 2026/2027 academic year.
The government says the involvement of private schools will provide additional opportunities for candidates and help expand the capacity available for SHS education.
Candidates using self-placement have been encouraged to consider participating private schools as well as public SHSs, Senior High Technical Schools and technical and vocational institutions.
The inclusion of private schools could give more candidates additional options during the placement process, particularly those who were unable to secure their preferred public schools.
Candidates With Certain Grade 9 Results Can Use Self-Placement
The Ministry of Education has also provided an opportunity for some candidates who obtained Grade 9 in English Language or Mathematics.
Eligible candidates in this category can access the self-placement system and select from institutions and programmes where vacancies are available.
The arrangement is intended to give more qualified young people an opportunity to continue their education rather than ending their educational journey at the basic-school level.

2026 BECE Candidates Increased
The 2026 placement exercise follows an increase in the number of candidates who took the Basic Education Certificate Examination.
A total of 623,072 candidates were recorded for the 2026 BECE, compared with 603,328 candidates in 2025.
This represents an increase of 19,744 candidates.
The growing number of candidates places additional pressure on the country’s second-cycle education system, particularly in schools that already receive a very high number of applications.
It also makes effective management of school capacity and placement an important issue for the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education.

Choosing an available school does not mean that a candidate has failed. The most important thing is securing a suitable place where the student can continue their education.
