53,887 BECE Candidates With Grade 9 in English or Mathematics Get Self-Placement Opportunity
Thousands of candidates who were not automatically placed into Senior High School after the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination have been given another opportunity to continue their education through the self-placement system.
The Ministry of Education has announced that candidates who obtained Grade 9 in English Language, Mathematics, or both subjects can access the self-placement platform of the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) and choose from schools and programmes with available vacancies.
The decision affects 53,887 candidates and is intended to provide another pathway for eligible young people who could not secure automatic placement during the initial CSSPS exercise.
Who Can Use the Self-Placement Opportunity?
The affected candidates are those who obtained Grade 9 in either English Language or Mathematics, as well as those who obtained Grade 9 in both subjects.
According to information released by the Ministry of Education, 35,382 candidates obtained Grade 9 in either English Language or Mathematics, while another 18,505 candidates obtained Grade 9 in both subjects.
Together, these groups account for 53,887 candidates who have been allowed to use the self-placement system.
The government says the arrangement is intended to ensure that candidates are not unnecessarily left without an opportunity to continue their education at the second-cycle level.
Deputy Minister for Education, Dr Clement Apaak, announced the decision during a briefing on the 2026 school placement exercise.
He encouraged the affected candidates and their parents not to lose hope, explaining that the self-placement option gives them an opportunity to select schools where vacancies are available.
Why Were These Candidates Not Automatically Placed?
The 2026 CSSPS placement exercise involved a large number of candidates competing for places in Senior High Schools, Senior High Technical Schools and other second-cycle institutions.
The Ministry reported that 57,259 candidates were not placed through the initial automatic placement process. This figure, however, includes different groups of candidates.
Of the 57,259 candidates, 35,382 obtained Grade 9 in either English Language or Mathematics, while 18,505 obtained Grade 9 in both subjects. Another 3,372 candidates did not sit the BECE.
The government subsequently allowed the candidates with Grade 9 in English and/or Mathematics to participate in self-placement. The 3,372 candidates who did not sit the examination were not included in the current placement opportunity and are expected to have another opportunity to write the examination.
This distinction is important because the figure of 57,259 refers to candidates who were not placed automatically, while 53,887 refers specifically to those who received Grade 9 in English, Mathematics or both and were allowed to use self-placement.
How Self-Placement Works
Candidates who qualify for self-placement can use the CSSPS self-placement platform to search for schools and programmes with available vacancies.
Instead of waiting for an automatic placement into one of their original choices, candidates can consider the schools and programmes that still have available spaces.
The Ministry has advised candidates to look carefully at available options, including the location of the school, the programmes offered and their individual educational needs.
The opportunity is particularly important for candidates whose preferred schools had high demand and could not accommodate all the students who selected them.
Candidates and parents should also be careful when making decisions during the self-placement process. The Ministry has stressed that the CSSPS placement exercise is free and has warned parents and candidates against paying individuals who claim they can secure or change a placement.
More Than 500,000 Candidates Already Placed
The self-placement opportunity comes after more than 500,000 candidates secured automatic placement through the 2026 CSSPS exercise.
The Ministry reported that 527,932 candidates had secured placement out of 604,567 qualified candidates, representing about 87.3 per cent of qualified candidates.
The large number of candidates placed automatically means the self-placement process is being used as an additional pathway for those who could not be matched with their preferred choices or did not meet the conditions for automatic placement.
The Ministry has explained that the challenge was not simply a lack of school spaces. A major issue was the difference between where available vacancies existed and the schools candidates preferred.
For example, 313,283 candidates selected Category A schools as their first choice, while the declared vacancies in Category A schools stood at 76,417. By comparison, Category B schools had 250,366 vacancies and Category C schools had 468,652 vacancies.
This situation meant that some schools received far more demand than the number of places they had available.
Candidates Should Consider Available Options
Candidates using self-placement have been encouraged to consider all suitable options rather than concentrating only on the most highly subscribed schools.
The Ministry has urged candidates and parents to look at available vacancies and consider schools that offer suitable programmes and are practical in terms of location.
This could help candidates secure admission without unnecessarily delaying their transition from basic school to second-cycle education.
The self-placement system is therefore intended to provide flexibility while making use of available spaces across the country’s second-cycle institutions.
Placement Resolution Centres Also Available
The Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service have established placement resolution centres to assist candidates and parents who experience genuine difficulties with the CSSPS process.
A National Placement Resolution Centre has been operating in Accra, while regional centres have also been established to make assistance more accessible.
Parents and candidates who face problems with their placement can seek assistance from the appropriate education authorities rather than paying unofficial agents.
The centres are dealing with different placement-related concerns, including unsuccessful placement, programme issues and other challenges encountered during the CSSPS exercise.
What This Means for Affected Candidates
For candidates who obtained Grade 9 in English Language, Mathematics or both subjects, the announcement means that the initial failure to secure automatic placement does not necessarily end their opportunity to enter SHS.
They now have an alternative route through self-placement and can consider schools with available vacancies.
Parents and guardians should therefore encourage affected candidates to examine the available options carefully and follow the official CSSPS process.
Candidates should also avoid giving money to people who promise to manipulate the placement system or secure a particular school outside the official process.
The Ministry has repeatedly emphasized that the placement process is free.
The Bigger Picture
The 2026 placement exercise has generated considerable public discussion, particularly over the number of candidates who were not automatically placed and the demand for highly subscribed schools.
The Ghana Education Service has defended the revised post-BECE school selection system, under which candidates selected their preferred schools after receiving their BECE results.
